The 5 Songs You Need to Hear This Week

Welcome to "All the Songs You Need to Hear This Week," a series where we round up the best music you might have missed in the past seven-ish days. In this edition, Janet Jackson premieres the title track from her new album, Empress Of covers Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus outdoes herself.

1. Janet Jackson, "Unbreakable"
After kicking off her new tour earlier this week, Janet premiered the title track from her forthcoming new album. Somewhat more upbeat than the previously released "No Sleeep," the Jimmy Jam- and Terry Lewis-produced "Unbreakable" can be read as a love letter to Janet's unwavering fans or an extremely loyal paramour. Either way, Janet is back!

2. Little Mix, "Hair"
A brutally honest and catchy breakup song from your new favorite girl band. Their "switch it up, switch it up" chant applies in many different situations, but make sure you queue "Hair" up every time you have to counsel a friend through a messy split — that "he was just a dick and I knew it" line ought to be pretty cathartic in times of need.

3. Thunderbitch, "Leather Jacket"
Just four months after Alabama Shakes released their last album Sound & Color, frontwoman Brittany Howard has gone and made another LP with her side project Thunderbitch. Where the Alabama Shakes mine soul and the blues for inspiration, Thunderbitch takes its cues from garage and punk. One thing remains constant though — Brittany's insanely flexible, amazing voice. Listen to "Leather Jacket" and the rest of Thunderbitch here.

4. Miley Cyrus, "Lighter"
Perhaps you've heard that Miley Cyrus released a new album this week, called Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz. It's a lot to get through at 23 tracks (though worth it), so shorter attention spans would do well to start with something like "Lighter," one of the prettier, more accessible tracks on Dead Petz. Produced by Miley's old pal Mike WiLL Made-It, "Lighter" is an '80s-inspired synth-pop ballad that wouldn't be out of place during a slow dance at a prom, which is to say it's great. Click here to listen.

5. Empress Of, "Hot N Cold"
Loreley Rodriguez takes Katy Perry's ubiquitous pop confection and turns it into something colder, harsher, and altogether more effective at projecting anger.

Bonus: Beyoncé, "Crazy in Love (2014 Remix)"
Not at all new, but newly released to Spotify after appearing only on the paid version of the Fifty Shadessoundtrack. Consider it Beyoncé's gift to you on her birthday, and never let it be said that she doesn't care for her Beyhive.
