NEMA relocates 4,000 Niger returnees

The National Emergency Management Agency has commenced the transportation of about 4,000 Nigerian returnees who arrived Geidam, Yobe State from the Republic of Niger to their various states, the agency said on Friday.
The information was contained in a statement made available to Saturday PUNCH by the agency’s Public Relations Officer, South West zone, Ibrahim Farinloye.
The affected persons had arrived Nigeria during the week after being repatriated from Niger.
NEMA said about 400 returnees were taken in 18 buses from Geidam to Sokoto and Kebbi states.
The agency said more than 40 high capacity buses and vehicles had been used to transport the returnees; adding that this would continue until all the returnees are fully moved to their various states.
Earlier in the week, the agency had disclosed that the returnees were from 10 states, including Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi and Kano.
The refugees in the neighbouring countries were those who escaped from Nigeria at the peak of Boko Haram assault in the North-East.

According to the agency, additional 2,000 refugees are expected to arrive the country by Sunday.
It will be recalled that the Director-General of NEMA, Muhammad Sidi, who was represented by the Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Charles Otegbade, said NEMA was providing the refugees with basic supports, including food and sleeping materials at the transit camps in Geidam.
He also said the agency was providing them with security and medical supports.
