Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu and George Akume, Senate Minority Leader, on Tuesday sent their condolences to the government and people of Abia State over the death of Senator Uche Chukwumerije, whose demise they described as unfortunate and a big loss to the nation at large.

As read in a message signed by governor Chime’s Chief Press Secretary, Chukwudi Achife, he described the late senator as a patriot who “attended his legislative and other national duties with deep insight and genuine concern for equity and justice among all Nigerians.”

Chime urged the family, colleagues and constituents of the late senator to find consolation in the worthy legacies that he left behind.

Meanwhile, senator Akume said he received the news of the demise of his fellow senator with shock and disbelief noting that the late politician brought to bear his experience in the media and civil society in his legislative activities.

The former Benue State governor said this in a statement he issued in Abuja.

According to him, the late senator was a vibrant pan-Africanist.

The statement partly read, “The late senator was a very vibrant legislator who brought to bear his wealth of experience in the media, the civil society and the government in our debates in the Senate.

“As the Senate Committee Chairman on Education, he made useful contributions at the committee level and during plenary sessions to the educational advancement of Nigeria.

“His contributions on other issues were also very valuable because he possessed all round knowledge on various issues.

“The late senator was a colourful pan-Africanist and his presence among us gave the Senate the much needed international clout and recognition.”

Akume also said the late Chukwumerije would be sorely missed by the Senate, his constituency, Nigeria and Africa for his useful contributions in every station he found himself. He prayed God to grant his soul eternal rest.

Meanwhile, tributes continued to pour in for the late legislator who, until his death, was the leader of the Abia State caucus in the National Assembly.
